What is the 2020 Census and why is it important to me?
The census plays a part in every day for Utahns from education and roads to healthcare and politics. The outcome of the census can determine electoral representation down to the local level, including school boards and city councils. Infrastructure decisions and funding, from road repairs to transit development, use information based on census counts. Public safety uses these numbers to guide decisions about service areas, fire stations, police precincts and hospitals. The census impacts every part of life in Utah, so be counted because you matter.
Utah has an estimated 3.21 million people
The amount of federal funding Utah receives for healthcare, education and transportation is dependent on census participation. In recent years, that funding accounted for 28% of the state budget.
Your information is safe and confidential. It will never be shared with anyone or any other government agency.
By law, all information gathered by the census is confidential. Your answers can only be used to produce statistics and do not include anything that will identify you.

The 2020 Census is easier to take than ever before. For the first time, it can be done in minutes online including on your phone. The census can also be completed easily by phone or mail. However you decide to complete it, be sure to be counted. You matter.

Who should be counted in your household?
Everyone in Utah will be counted by the 2020 Census based on where they live on April 1. You should count every individual in your household, no matter their age. If members of your household are attending school out of state or serving a church mission, for example, they should not be counted as they are not living in Utah at the time of the count. They will instead be counted in the place they live on April 1.
